Hey everyone,

I was at a loss for where I could look for a potential partner in executing an after-school program at my high school, Phillips, for the 2012-2013 school year. Then I remembered... there are a lot of people interested in social work, economic equity, etc. in the frisbee clan, so I'll go ahead and test the waters here, to see if there is any serious interest.

I am in the process of submitting a proposal to After School Matters, an organization that funds many of the after-school programs running at the city schools throughout Chicago. The plan is basically to run 3-4 clubs after school, throughout the week:

1) vegetable garden club and farm share
2) electronics repair and resale club
3) sound studio and songwriting club
4) frisee club

The main two clubs, where we will spend most of our time, is #1 and #2. The position will be a paid position -- probably between $20-$25 hourly, for about 5-6 hours each school day (112:00 or 1:00-6:00 PM) plus some weekend work when needed. The school year runs from August to early June, but the position will ideally last year-round due to the vegetable garden being part of the club. I will be responsible for organizing most of it; your role will be to support and basically be a program co-manager. You will need to have a sense of humor, and ideally be able to simultaneously make teenagers feel better about themselves while also challenging themselves/pushing their boundaries.

First-hand experience that would directly benefit one of the first two clubs is necessary; interest in all four of them is preferred. If you are SERIOUSLY interested, please reply with a brief email including your experiences and how they would help you contribute.

The position is not guaranteed, but I'm hoping to get it funded. We'll know by mid-April if we're gonna get to do it.

Fuck, thinking really seriously about applying to grad school now. Gonna have to get back to the grind and start studying for the Biology GRE at the end of October next year. Guess that gives me a huge amount of time to make sure I do exceptionally well.

I'm really considering a particular grad school in Hawaii, there are two professors there researching marine mammal acoustics and behavior and I absolutely need to get into that field.

I guess I figure I'm dreaming bigger now, marine mammal keeper at the Shedd would be wonderful, but the chance to work in the field with wild dolphins and whales is that much better. Perhaps I could fulfill my dream of being a man of the sea.

I have some time to get my shit in order at least. The deadline for application submission is January 15th of next year, so as long as the world doesn't end I'm shooting to go there in August of 2013. Aside from that, need to contact professors and ask for recommendations... that's going to be dumb, I haven't spoken to them since last year but I guess that's the process.

I just emailed one of my favorite professors to see if I could help out in his lab from now until the summer of next year, hopefully that works out, I need more stupid research experience.

My GPA is good overall, science GPA though... hmm. Organic Chemistry and Chemistry really fucked it over, I might only have a 3.0 excluding non-science stuff, I'll have to check.

If I manage to get a good GRE score and get accepted though, it should all be free to attend and live there for however many years depending on if I do a doctorate too or just a master's.

Ahh life... so much bullshit to wade through.

Fuuuuck. I hope I get in. Another plus, maybe I'd meet a beautiful island girl who could teach me beautiful Hawaiian. Or I could just meet some sciencey girl, either way.

TL;DR Had dream that I was cursed to end the world.

We went on a trip to Europe. Inside one of the ancient cathedrals, there was a hall with a mirror that the tour guide proposed looked into the future. As everyone left to tour the rest place, I stood in front and saw myself kneeling inside the circle and so I did. A weight falls upon me and I am seized by a giant white orb. I stand myself up only to be paralyzed by the weight of the orb. Someone finds me standing and speaks to me. Though I hear the voice I see only see the orb and the blurred walls around me. something something about a old bible that writting by someone which was important somehow.

Man, I'm sitting here in a research lab at UIC and I was talking to the guy mentoring me as I observe. He's a really interesting guy from India, grew up in a small village there and wants to go back and teach as a University Prof. some day. As we talked about our life goals and future plans, combined with the aura of tedium this place reeks, it dawned on me how much I love working with the animals at the Nature Museum.

As the lab was on its lunch break I found the title-linked article and found a few precious lines that really got me excited. My thoughts on these excerpts follow.

"For every minute spent working with the animals, trainers spend even more time cleaning, preparing food, and completing extensive record keeping. The trainers at the Shedd Aquarium are scheduled to work 11-hour days, but Whiton said the trainers usually start early and stay late. "Every minute of the day is packed with something," said Whiton, relaxing for a moment in her wet suit. "Sometimes you can't fit it all in, but somebody else will chip in and help you out."

Well shit, sounds just like my job at the Nature Museum so far.

"While spending time with the animals is the main appeal of the job, one drawback to dolphin training is that it doesn't pay as much as most people would expect. In fact, it doesn't pay much at all. The seemingly never ending supply of people who are willing to become animal trainers keeps the pay low, even for trainers who have been in the industry for years.

Understandable, the sheer number of people applying will be the hardest barrier to entry, coupled with the fact that once people make it in they normally stay for the rest of their lives. I've come to terms with this and already accepted that I'm getting in even if it means an indefinite period of time volunteering and interning there until something opens up or I get lucky. Thank God for my mom's support. I remember another story about someone who wanted to train animals at the Shedd, where the guy had to work six months unpaid before they hired him. And he was lucky to get that. I'm willing to do several years, honestly.

"I started out at minimum wage with no benefits, and that was with a college degree," lamented McGee. "The salary I am making now after doing this for ten years is about the same amount my best friend was making her first year out of college as a nurse. You have to do it for love and not money."

Check. Already doing all of this volunteer and internshipping for no pay, so hell minimum wage seems that much better. I can't explain it but the animals really do make it all worthwhile. Coupled with the fact that the work puts you through rigorous physical activity for upwards of 11 hours a day this just seems like a great way to live life. Only downside would be lack of time to spend time with you guys/have a social life. I imagine it's possible though.

"Several times each day trainers will put on scuba gear and dive to scrub algae from the giant tanks."

This fact is obvious, and possibly one of the best parts of the job aside from the actual animal training. So daily, I get to be able to breathe, swimming over thirty feet underwater? I've always felt more at ease in water than on land, hell I'd do this part of the job for free. When I'm swimming, I feel like I am meant to be there as a human being. I'd be depressed without a large body of water of some sort nearby. Aquatic Ape Theory holds all the more validity to me because of this.

"It's a great job, I love it," said the Shedd's Whiton. "It's fun. It's emotional. It's long hours and lot's of great people and really great animals. It's physically straining. We get weird rashes and cracks in our fingers that just keep bleeding."

I'm already getting this at the Nature Museum, being around and dealing with constant exposure to water, salt water, acids from fruits/chemicals/etc... So again nothing unexpected here.

There are a lot of good times, and every once in a while a couple of hard times. It's just a job, but you love it. We don't get paid very much and we're wet and we stink, but we're still here and we do it because we love it."

Exactly man.

So yeah, current goal in life for now, become a flippin' dolpin trainer, something I've always wanted to do but deemed impossible for some reason or another. No longer, I'm committed and capable. I know I can do this and I'd be great at it.

I love being human and really have grown to appreciate it more, and I want to take full advantage of the gifts granted to me by being human. Not all animals can hold their breath, not all animals can choose to breath through their mouths. I want to be taking advantage of all my granted evolutionary adaptations, and many of them seem to revolve around water. We're marine mammals almost as much as the guys I want to study are.

TLDR: I'm going to do whatever it takes to become an animal trainer at the Shedd Aquarium.

Instant Dream Write-down

Damn... I've already forgotten some parts of the dream.

I'm a misunderstood man that looks like Luther but spends many nights on the street, both to feel one with the city and to keep a Batman-like watch on the supernatural and criminal comings and goings of my part of the metropolis. Parts of the city resemble Bridgeport. I remember tackling a crazy or possibly possessed woman in the tunnel on Archer, between Canal and Cermak.

I guess that I'm Luther meets Constantine, in a city where I think everyone speaks with an English accent, although my mind could be filling that in post-dream. Passersby think that I'm some homeless black guy, but the people in the know keep me on retainer sometimes. I'm approached by three different people with three different problems, but the dream only manages to conclude one.

The first is an old acquaintance that sees me twice, once to mention that he might need my help because it appears that a few black taxi drivers have died, but that it could be a coincidence. He seeks me out once more; it appears that someone or something has been killing his taxi-driver friends.

The second case, also unresolved, involves a wealthy black rapper and his wife that want a bodyguard for a show the next day; they'd been getting death threats recently. I meet with the rapper and try to fit him into my schedule, telling him that I would recon the theater the next morning, but then tell him that it'll have to be later in the day; I had just recalled that I'd already committed the night and that morning, the one in question, to assisting a friend with his situation (the 3rd case). The rapper was displeased, but I assured that I'd help him later in the day.

I drove to one of my oldest friends' houses; he had approached me earlier in the dream about mysterious and possibly malevolent events occurring since they welcomed their baby boy. When I arrive, he explains the situation to me, telling me about weird shit happening: items moved in the night, bruises on his wife's body, awakening to frigid temperatures, etc. I tell them that I'll stay the night. They for some reason have a twin-sized bed in the master bedroom in addition to their king-sized bed.

My friend's brother arrives soon after I do, coming all the way from another part of the country because my friend had told him about the happenings of late, and the brother had worriedly come cross-country just to help take care of his newborn nephew.

After a light dinner and wine with my friend's family, everyone turns in; my friend's brother slept in the guest room down the hall and the baby boy slept snugly between his mother and father. I get into the twin-sized bed that's also in the master bedroom.

I slip into a vivid dream, my mind making it's way through previous cases. Things flash rapidly in and out of my sight, and suddenly my unconscious mind thinks that it has made a tenuous connection with this situation and one I'd dealt with in the past. A pregnant change-holder/piggy bank with "COLLEGE FUND" written prominently in black Sharpie that I'd seen in my friend's house flashes into view, taking up almost the entirety of my dream's field of vision. I see the container spin around. The small inconspicuous Д on the back glows red like one I'd seen in an unfortunate soul's house, years ago.

I awaken immediately after that. Sunlight filters gray through the windows, but my friend and his wife are still asleep. I hear the brother making breakfast already through the closed door, the pots and pans gently assaulting my ears. I feel unusually heavy as I roll out of bed to check on the family.

I see no baby between the two. I rip away their covers, rousing them in the process. No baby. Neither of them had taken the baby out of bed. The door is still closed. Mama looks panicked. I notice a red stain on the white sheets of the corner of the bed I'd been sleeping on. I lift the mattress away from the box-spring and I'm horrified to find what appears to a small and bloody rack of ribs.

I go to the door and fling it open to see my friend's brother in the kitchen; he's in a white apron and chef's hat, both spotted in blood. His arm is raised, and right before he brings the cleaver in his hand crashing down again, he looks up at the sound of the door opening and gives me the toothiest grin I have ever seen, his face contorting to impossibly.

Blood spatters covered the entire kitchen. I tell my friend to close and lock the door and to keep his wife inside. The brother had merrily returned to preparing his breakfast, the grin still on his face. I get to the kitchen and call his name; he looks up, and the corners of his mouth seem to part themselves even more, tearing his lips a little under his nose and adding his own blood to that already on his pajamas and apron.

Without a sound, he starts coming around the large kitchen table set in the center of the room, cleaver in hand. I go around the table, keeping it between us, much like I'd keep a car between a polar bear and I. He just silently plods his way around the table, unresponsive to my calls to his name. We make it a few times around the table before I throw a bottle of olive oil at him; it glances off of his head and shatters on the wall, seemingly getting no reaction until he starts speed-shuffling around the table, cleaver still in hand and grin on face.

I throw more things; blenders, mason jars, and bowls find his head to no effect. He doesn't even turn to look at me, just the never-ending and slowly quickening shuffle of his slippers around the table. Finally, I pick up the heavy microwave from the counter and turn around to see him almost running towards me with these eyes and this grin, cleaver raised above his head. I heave the microwave into his chest right as he's about to come down with the cleaver, and they go crashing to the ground.

My friend can't handle the wait anymore and comes into the kitchen to see the commotion, only to freeze at the sight of the room spattered in blood and his newborn scattered across the kitchen. His brother gets up and we continue our dance, but I'd managed to make him drop his cleaver. I start throwing kitchen knives at him. One manages to stick into his shoulder, but he just yanks it out and throws it back, narrowly missing me.

I slip on one of the blenders I'd thrown earlier, but the microwave on the floor of course poses no resistance to his legs' unflinching shuffle. Before I know it, he's upon me, choking the shit out of me. I bury my thumbs so far into his eye sockets that I feel liquid run down my forearms, but that grin never leaves his face. I see a moving shadow out of the corner of my rapidly fading vision and suddenly the fucker rolls off of me; my friend stands above both of us in a daze, holding a giant rolling pin.

Curiously enough, the dream goes into an epilogue. I feel that I failed, since I didn't understand the significance of the piggy-bank before it was too late. My friend does not blame me, but his marriage cannot survive the death of their child and they divorce; the end of the dream is dreary and seemingly in grayscale. The change-holder or whatever is never addressed again in the dream, but I assume that I smashed the shit out of it. Fucked up but very vivid dream.

Apparently every hero has unique lines for when you buy certain items on them, some say different stuff upon hitting different levels, some talk smack to other heroes they have a history with, etc... They also comment on stuff that happens to them like an ult getting interrupted. Anti-Mage says crap when you blink with blink dagger.

Some weapon items bought are actually shown on the heroes, replacing their default weapon model.

Also, there's going to be custom stuff like in LoL, skins and spell changes and whatnot.
